The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, was shocked and saddened to learn of the death in hospital in Damascus of Mr Mounir Darwish, following an apparent hit and run with a vehicle driven by an unidentified assailant outside his home. The Special Envoy calls for those involved to be identified and brought to justice.
Mr Darwish was a member of the Cairo Platform and the Syrian Negotiations Commission and an important proponent of opposition unity and of a negotiated political transition. He remained in Damascus as he sought peace and a better future for his country. Mr Darwish led the joint technical talks for the Cairo Platform in June and July 2017 with a high degree of expertise and pragmatism. His knowledge and humility gained him respect inside and outside his Platform and from the United Nations team.
The Special Envoy extends his sincere condolences to Mr Darwish’s family and his colleagues.
