United Nations family and humanitarian partners in Geneva marking the World Humanitarian Day on 21 August 2017
Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Room (Room XX)
Designated to be observed on 19 August, the day in 2003 when 22 colleagues were killed at the United Nations office in Baghdad, World Humanitarian Day holds special significance for the United Nations family. On this day, we come together to pay tribute to colleagues who have lost their lives in humanitarian service, we celebrate the spirit of the survivors and we salute the humanitarians who bring relief to fellow human beings across the world.
This year, the Geneva World Humanitarian Day commemoration is organized in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross, Médecins sans Frontières and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). It will include a panel discussion on “Violence against health care and its implications for affected populations, humanitarian workers and aid”, followed by an award ceremony organized by the Sergio Vieira de Mello Foundation. A solemn commemoration to acknowledge humanitarian workers who have lost their lives in the line of duty will take place outside Room XX. The observance will conclude with a small reception generously offered by OCHA.
Participants without a valid access badge for the Palais des Nations are invited to register here: https://reg.unog.ch/event/20332/
