About the event:
The Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation, together with the Charity Foundation “Give Love to the World”, wishes to organize a photography exhibition entitled “Only Wings Matter. Breaking Stereotypes”.
This inspiring photo exhibition aims, on one hand, to help people with disabilities to believe in themselves and get involved into all spheres of life, and on the other hand, to educate the whole society that disabled persons are equal to others: they are beautiful, capable, fearless and worth of the highest level of respect.
The subject of this exhibition is fully consistent with the annual HRC debate as well as the interactive dialogues with the Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities and cultural rights. The exhibition will consist of photographies of disabled people demonstrating their strengths and capacities.
About the Charity Project:
Last year the Charity Foundation «Give Love to the World» held an inspiring exhibition to boost the morale of people with amputations. With the support of local authorities and the socially responsible business they invited professional photographers to show the beauty of human body no matter its physical disorder, as well as the unlimited capabilities of disabled people.
Volunteers among people with amputations of different ages agreed to act as models. Some pictures were made in the studio, but most of them were captured en plein air and sometimes required real courage from the participants. The most breathtaking experience was to jump with a parachute to demonstrate that people without legs and arms can fly like birds — the only thing needed is to have wings in the heart. That is why it was finally decided to call the whole exhibition “Only Wings Matter”.
On the pictures you can see a little girl born with undeveloped limbs dancing ballet, a wheelchair-bound woman free-flying in the sky, a man without a leg plowing lake waters on a board, etc. The photo of a one-leg girl fearlessly standing on a traffic borderline won the bronze medal on a European photo contest "A World for All: Overcoming Disabilities 2017".
This initiative had an overwhelming success. And what is more important — incited people with amputations and other problems with the supporting-motor apparatus to go in for sports.
This year, the Charity Foundation «Give Love to the World» received a Presidential grant to organize an inter-city festival «Wish I Could Fly» allowing many people with disabilities to jump with a parachute. This time hundreds of people are expected to experience the free-flight feeling all over Russia. Socially responsible Russian companies have become sponsors of different sports activities for those who have problems with the supporting-motor apparatus.
