Informal Civil Society Forum on the Conference on Disarmament

"The Conference does not exist in isolation and we are not meeting in a vacuum here in Geneva. The consequences of the inability to agree in this Chamber go far beyond the Palais des Nations and even beyond the issue of disarmament. The work of the Conference is an integral part of the broader efforts to build a safer and more secure world where countries and communities can prosper. It is our moral obligation to ensure that the Conference contributes to that collective effort."

Michael Møller, 1316th Plenary Meeting of the Conference on Disarmament, 20 May 2014

The first-ever Informal Civil Society Forum on the Conference on Disarmament will be held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva on Thursday, 19 March 2015, in Room XII.

The Forum will be hosted and chaired by the Acting Secretary-General of the Conference on Disarmament and Personal Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General to the Conference, Mr. Michael Møller, who initially proposed the Forum in an address to the Conference on 20 May 2014.

As a pilot and the first of its kind, the Forum forms part of his ongoing efforts to facilitate initiatives that can help address the impasse in the Conference on Disarmament. It is based on the firm belief that there is much to be gained from a more structured and frequent exchange between States and civil society in this area.

Against this background, the overarching objective of the event is to generate ideas and inject different perspectives into the discussions on the agenda items of the Conference through informal interaction among States and civil society representatives.

The Forum is not an official Conference on Disarmament event, but the main conclusions of the discussions will be compiled in a Chairman’s Summary.

Participation in the Forum is by invitation. For the provisional programme, click here.
