GENEVA (11 July 2013) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, will conduct an official visit to Colombia from 16 to 19 July 2013 at the invitation of the Government of Colombia.
During her visit, Ms. Pillay will meet President Juan Manuel Santos, the Vice-President Angelino Garzon, as well as several Ministers and other senior officials. The High Commissioner will also meet the Attorney General, the Procurator General and the Human Rights Ombudsman, as well as other high-level representatives of the Judiciary. She will hold meetings with human rights defenders, civil society organizations, members of the international community and UN agencies.
The High Commissioner will travel to Santander de Quilichao, Cauca, where she will meet indigenous authorities and representatives of Afro-Colombian communities and peasants’ groups.
She also plans to discuss a wide range of issues with the authorities and civil society actors, including the fight against impunity, victims’ rights, discrimination, women’s rights and the situation of human rights defenders.
At the end of her visit, the High Commissioner will hold a press conference with the media to share the preliminary conclusions of her visit.
