(ISSUED AS RECEIVED) GENEVA (14 June 2013) – The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay will conduct her first official mission to the Republic of Serbia, including a visit to Kosovo, from 16 to 20 June 2013, at the invitation of the Government of the Republic of Serbia.
During her visit to Belgrade (16-18 June), Pillay will meet with the President, the Prime Minister, the Ministers of Justice and Public Administration, Labour, Employment and Social Policy, Health and with the representatives of the judiciary and of the Parliament. She will also meet with the Director of the Government’s Office for Human and Minority Rights, Serbia’s Ombudsman, the Commissioner for Protection of Equality, as well as with members of civil society.
The High Commissioner will visit the psychiatric hospital ‘Dr. Laza Lazareviæ’ in Padinska Skela, jointly with the National Torture Prevention Mechanism, in order to raise awareness of the human rights aspects and concerns linked to the deinstitutionalization process in Serbia.
On Wednesday 18 June, the High Commissioner will hold a press conference at the Media Center, Belgrade Terazije 3 at 16.00 hrs.
While in Kosovo (19-20 June), Pillay will meet with the representatives of the Kosovo authorities, judiciary and Parliament. She will also hold meetings with the Ombudsperson, with members of civil society. The High Commissioner will pay a visit to the municipality of Graҫanicë/Graèanica, and to the Balkans Sunflowers Learning Centre in Fushë Kosovë/Kosovo Polje.
On Thursday 20 June, the High Commissioner will hold a press conference at the Hotel Sirius, Street Agim Ramadani, at 15.30 hrs.
* All references to Kosovo should be understood in full compliance with UN SC Resolution 1244 (1999) and without prejudice to the status of Kosovo.
