Every year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The United Nations General Assembly has declared this a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

Launched in 2013, the Geneva Peace Talks is an annual, public event organized on the occasion of the International Day of Peace in partnership between the United Nations Office at Geneva, the Geneva Peacebuilding Platform and Interpeace.

Even in the most hostile and challenging environments, there are many peace initiatives taking place that don’t receive the attention they deserve. The 4th edition of the Geneva Peace Talks, organized under the theme "Peace Happens" will bring such initiatives and the people behind them to light.

Speakers coming from diverse backgrounds will share their personal experiences, stories and ideas to highlight how “Peace Happens.” This event aims to underline that everyone can contribute to peace – be it at home or in a far-away conflict zone. The Peace Talks symbolically stands for Geneva’s spirit to resolve conflict through dialogue and negotiation.

This year's Geneva Peace Talks is co-organized by the United Nations Office at Geneva, the Geneva Peacebuilding Platform and Interpeace, in partnership with the Kofi Annan Foundation, the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining, the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces and the Global Shapers Community Geneva. The event is made possible with the generous support of the Swiss Confederation, the Republic and State of Geneva, the City of Geneva, and Mirabaud Bank.

ABOUT THE PEACE TALKS

The Peace Talks is an initiative that seeks to expand the space for dialogue about building peace and resolving conflict.

The Peace Talks focuses on personal stories as a vehicle for sharing ideas and practical solutions, and for inspiring action. Through city-specific events, speakers from all walks of life deliver a short inspirational talk, known as a “Peace Talk.”

The objectives of the Peace Talks are to:

  • DEMONSTRATE that peaceful solutions to conflict exist
  • SHOWCASE inspiring stories
  • RAISE AWARENESS that each and every person has a role in building peace
  • INSPIRE action in everyday life and on a global scale.

The Peace Talks was initiated in Geneva, Switzerland in 2013 with the Geneva Peace Talks, co-organized by the United Nations Office at Geneva, Interpeace and the Geneva Peacebuilding Platform.

It has travelled to Stockholm in the Swedish Parliament, Nairobi at the United Nations and in Ottawa, Canada at the Global Centre for Pluralism.
