The Director-General met with Mr. Joseph Deiss, President of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Director-General participated in the opening of the 2011 ECOSOC High-Level Segment and substantive session.

The Director-General participated in a meeting of the General Assembly President Joseph Deiss with ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and highlighted the growing importance and participation of civil society in the work of the United Nations.

The Director-General attended a reception to celebrate the Liberation Day of Rwanda.
5 JULY 2011
The Director-General met with Ms. Lisa Buttenheim, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Cyprus.

The Director-General met with Ms. Irina Bokova, Director-General, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to discuss the important role of UNESCO in the Annual Ministerial Review of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and its focus on the Millennium Development Goals, including on universal primary education.

The Director-General met with Mrs. Laura Dupuy Lasserre, Permanent Representative of Uruguay, and President of the Human Rights Council.

The Director-General attended the exhibition “Culture of China: Splendid Sichuan”, in which he noted the history and culture of the Sichuan province, as well as the strength and determination of the Chinese people to rebuild their lives after the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008.

The Director-General met with Inspectors from the Joint Inspection Unit (JIU) and highlighted the contribution of the JIU in making the Organization more efficient and effective.

From 5 to 6 July, the Director-General held consultations with senior United Nations Officials, including the Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro, Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs B. Lynn Pascoe, and Under-Secretary-General for General Assembly Affairs and Conference Management Shaaban Muhammad Shaaban.

The Director-General accompanied Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon on his visit to the United Nations Office at Geneva, which included his meeting with Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders, address to the High-Level Segment of the 2011 Substantive session of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and meeting with the Heads of United Nations funds and programmes, specialized agencies and other international organizations in Geneva.

The Director-General met with the Swiss Federal Council, led by Mrs. Micheline Calmy-Rey, President of the Swiss Confederation who, for the first time in the history of UNOG paid a working visit to the Palais des Nations to discuss, among other issues, the support of the Host Country to UNOG and its proposed plans for a renovation of the Palais des Nations.

The Director-General met with students from the Institute of International Humanitarian Law, San Remo, Italy who are participating in the Institute’s annual Summer Course on International Humanitarian Law.
