World Environment Day - 5 June 2010 - Open Day


On the occasion of the World Environment Day, on 5 June 2010, the gates of the Ariana Park were opened to the public. Didactic activities show casing the biodiversity within the Ariana Park encouraged the public to discover the rich flora of the Park. A treasure hunt game and a "Snakes & Ladders" game on a human scale particularly interested the young public.


On the occasion of this Open day, more than a dozen of shows were organized on three open-air stages in the Ariana Park : stage "Sphere", by the Armiliary sphere, in the Cour d'honneur ; stage "Serpent" by the bar Serpent in the new building, and stage "Pelouse", situated in the gargen of the Villa "La pelouse".

It is on the stage Sphere that, at about 11 a.m. the "Jukebox Heroes" started the first musical show of the day. This group, coming from the Nyon area (25 km away from Geneva), is composed of six young guys aged 18 to 20. They offered us a mix of rock and pop successes from the 80s and 90s.






Chanteur "K"



They were followed by the young singer from Vaud named K, who played his own very intimist compositions and songs, accompanied with this guitar.










The Tango schoole, Tango Addiction, set fire to the stage with demonstration of Argentinean tango performed in the most perfect way which this art requires.






Groupe de hip-hop "Les Titans"
Another form of dance, more modern this time, lit up the stage: the group « les Titans », from Estavayer-le-Lac, offered a stunning demonstration of hip hop. They participated in several Swiss championships and in the world championships (in 2009) which took place in Las Vegas (United States of America).
In addition to their performance, they also offered a "coaching" session to the young public.



Orchestre de Jazz des Nations Unies


The closing concert was offered by the United Nations Jazz Orchestra from Geneva; their jazz - latino - Caribbean - Bulgarian repertoire accompanied the last visitors of this wonderful day.

The garden of the villa "La Pelouse" welcomed a wild and frantic "Lion's Dance", performance of martial art by the Lausanne Wushu Institut..





The balcony on the ground floor of the Villa was the perfect location to host the magnificent "Tea Ceremony" offered by the Permanent mission of Japan. The public came in numbers to enjoy this particular event. The master of ceremony offered then to the captured public a tea tasting session.













An exuberant demonstration of Capoeira, offered by the Capoeira group volta do mundo – Geneva, supported by the permanent mission of Brazil, closed the shows performed in the "Villa Pelouse" space. The boisterous rhythms of the tam-tams accompanied by the singing attracted an enthusiastic public to the grounds around the Villa.

It is at about noon that the members of the school "Groove Guitar" from the Pays de Gex (in neighbouring France) started their performance on the Serpent Stage. A dozen of teenagers from 14 to 18, as well as their professor, played modern and rock songs, accompanied by several guitars (electric, bass, etc.).












The Club of Oriental dance of the United Nations in Geneva show cased the talent of some of the UN Staff. Colourful costumes and swaying rhythms captivated the attention of the public.







It is with the dance group "Urunana", from Rwanda, that the Serpent Stage closed for the day, with a traditional dance performance filled with grace and harmony, which enthralled the public.
