GGE sessions in 2008

The 2007 Meeting of the High Contracting Parties to the Convention decided that in 2008 the Group of Governmental Experts will negotiate a proposal to address urgently the humanitarian impact of cluster munitions, while striking a balance between military and humanitarian considerations. The GGE should make every effort to negotiate this proposal as rapidly as possible and report on the progress made to the 2008 Meeting of the High Contracting Parties. The work of the GGE would be supported by military and technical experts.

The 2007 Meeting of the High Contracting Parties also decided that the GGE would meet in 2008 not less than three times for a total of up to seven weeks. Following an adjustment to the calendar made by the Chairperson of the GGE in consultation with the regional groups, the GGE sessions in 2008 were as follows:

  • 14 – 18 January
  • 7 - 11 April
  • 7 – 25 July
  • 1 – 5 September
  • 3 – 7 November

A note verbale by the Secretary-General on convening the 2008 sessions of the GGE was circulated in January 2008, as follows:

The 2008 sessions of the GGE were chaired by Ambassador Bent Wigotski of Denmark. The Meetings of the Military and Technical Experts of the Group were chaired by Maj. Gen. Lars C. Fynbo of Denmark.
