In accordance with its mandate, and in line with its efforts to assist the Chair of BWC meetings, the ISU has presented information on the Convention, its history and Review Conferences, the activities and efforts of States Parties, the current intersessional programme, and universalization activities.

• Technical Coordination Meeting for Legislative Assistance Providers in the Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Weapons Field, VERTIC, London, UK, 29 January 2008. The ISU made a presentation on National Implementation and the Provision of Assistance under the BWC.

• At the Geneva Forum Disarmament Orientation on 8 February 2008, the ISU briefed participants on the Biological Weapons Convention.

• Diplomatic Building Blocks: A Training Course in Support of the 2008 BWC Meetings of Experts and States Parties, BWPP, Geneva, Switzerland, 18-19 March 2008. The ISU made presentations on the Outcomes of the 2006 Review Conference of the BWC, and the 2008 BWC Topics: Previous Agreements and Understandings.

• 2nd International Forum on Biosecurity, Budapest, Hungary, 30 March - 2 April 2008. The ISU participated in the forum.

• 11th Annual Conference of the European Biosafety Association, Florence, Italy, 3-4 April 2008. The ISU gave a presentation on Biosafety, Biosecurity and the BWC.

• Regional Semiar for the Middle East, EU Joint Action in Support of the BWC, Council of the European Union, Rome, Italy, 16-17 April 2008. The ISU made a presentation on the Coordination of Assistance Requests and Offers by the BWC ISU.

• Kick Off Meeting of the Knowledge Management System on CBRN trafficking in South-East Europe and the Caucasus, United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), Turin, Italy, 14-15 May 2008. The ISU made a presentation on the BWC, the ISU and You.

• Synthetic Biology Discussion Meeting, Royal Society, London, UK, 2-3 June 2008. The ISU participated in the meeting.

• Regional Seminar on Promoting and Implementing Biosafety and Biosecurity Management, Norway, Indonesia and the ISU, Jakarta, Indonesia, 4-5 June 2008. The ISU made a presentation on the Role of the BWC ISU.

• Buidling Stakeholdership in Support of Malawi's Ratification of the BWC, BWPP, ISS & CHRR, Lilongwe, Malawi, 5 June 2008. The ISU made a presentation on the BWC and the summary concluding remarks.

• Biological Weapons Convention: French Language Seminar, ISU, 12 June 2008. The ISU held a seminar on the BWC and the 2008 topics in French. The ISU made a presentation on its activities. Additional information can be found here.

• 4th Annual Science and Technology for Homeland Security and Resilence Conference, Royals United Services Institute, London, UK, 25-26 June 2008. The ISU made a presentation on the BWC & Terrorism.

• On 1 July, the ISU made a presentation on the Biological Weapons Convention at a orientation event for Egyption diplomats organised by the Geneva Forum.

• Introductary remarks for a series of audiovisual presentations at the event Synthetic Biology: Engineering Life Science, hosted by the Geneva Forum in coordination with the Implementation Support Unit on the margins of the 2008 Meeting of Experts, Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland, 18 August 2008.

• The ISU briefed participants in the UN Disarmament Fellowship Programme on the Biological Weapons Convention on 28 August 2008.

• Why secure synthetic biology? at Synthetic Biology 4.0. Hong Kong University of Science and technology 10-12 October 2008.

• At a 1540 Committee Briefing on the Biological Weapons Convention, the ISU made a presentation on the Role of the Biological Weapons Convention Implementation Support Unit on 16 October 2008 in UN Headquarters in New York.

• At the National Security Summit in Dubai on 27 - 28 October 2008, the ISU made a presentation on Preventing WMD Terrorism: Improving National Security through Integration and Coordination - The Biological Weapons Example.

• At the meeting Confronting Biological Threats: Biosecurity, Biological Weapons Non-Proliferation and Regional Cooperative Mechanisms, held in Amman Jordan from 27 - 29 October 2008, the ISU made a presentation on The BWC, Biothreats, Biosecurity, BW Non-Proliferation and Regional Cooperation

• The Implementation Support Unit attended the closing workshop of SynBioSafe in Vienna, Austria on 15 November 2008.

• A member of the ISU attended the Workshop on the Implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1540 in Sao Paulo, Brazil from 24 to 28 November 2008. During the meeting, the ISU made the presentation on Capacity Building under the Biological Weapons Convention.
