Accessibility at UNOG
The United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) is committed to ensuring the accessibility of its premises, services and website to all its stakeholders, clients, visitors and other users, in accordance with Article 9 (g) of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and in support of that Convention.
UNOG is specifically committed to making its facilities and conferences accessible to, and inclusive of, persons with disabilities. UNOG is working to make its website accessible in accordance with the World Wide Web Consortium’s Web Accessibility Initiative’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20/).
Accessibility Features During Conferences
For certain mandated meetings, UNOG provides accessibility services such as real-time captioning (the verbal proceedings of a meeting are typed in simultaneously on a screen in the conference room), hearing loops, sign language interpretation, and Braille documentation. To obtain further information, please contact directly the substantive secretariat of the meeting you are attending.
Webcasts of meetings with accessibility features are available on UN Web TV website.
When Arriving at the Palais des Nations
To facilitate access to the premises for persons with disabilities, UNOG’s Security and Safety Service has implemented a standard procedure whereby priority access is automatically provided upon arrival at Pregny Gate. It is important to remember that external delegates, visitors and others can only access the Palais premises through Pregny Gate. After passing through the priority lane, Security Officers at Pregny Gate will issue a special badge for persons with disabilities that allows them to open the door that is accessible through the elevator on the side of the gate and exit through there. Along with the special badge, the Security Officers will also provide the visitors with a map of the Palais, which clearly indicating accessible doors, elevators and restrooms, and then they will guide them to the next accessible elevator and will explain to them how to get around. When exiting the building, visitors are instructed to return the special badge to Security. Visitors are also informed that if they leave after 7:30pm, they cannot exit with the badge using the special door anymore, but instead have to exit via the ramp and then calling for assistance, using the telephone at the top of the ramp next to the exit.
More information about procedures for external visitors and delegates can be found here.
