2009-2011 EU Joint Action

Between May 2009 and December 2011, the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs in Geneva acted as the implementing agency for the European Union Joint Action in Support of the Biological Weapons Convention.

The Joint Action in Support of the Biological Weapons Convention was mandated by the Council Joint Action 2008/858/CFSP in support of the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention, adopted on 10 November 2008 by the Council of the European Union. It was broadly anchored in the European Union Security Strategy, European Union Strategy against the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction, and European Union's Common Position for the Sixth Review Conference of the BWC. Its aims and objectives emulated the conclusions of the Sixth Review Conference of the the Biological Weapons Convention, held in 2006.


THE EU BWC JOINT ACTION CONSISTED OF THE FOLLOWING PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES:


The last contribution of this EU BWC Joint Action to the BWC regime was the translation of the "Guide to Participating in the Confidence-building Measures for the Biological Weapons Convention" into the official languages of the United Nations.
