Director-General Welcomes UN Secretary-General to Geneva

The Director-General welcomed the United Nations Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon to Geneva and accompanied him throughout his visit. The Secretary-General delivered a speech at the opening session of the Human Rights Council, met with President Maurer and the staff of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), participated in the inauguration of the John D. Rockefeller Reading Room in UNOG’s League of Nations Archives and opened the exhibition “For the Well-Being of Mankind: Philanthropy and Multilateralism”.
He then gave a public lecture together with Mr. Didier Burkhalter, Federal Councillor, Head of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, sponsored by the University of Geneva and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies which focused on the challenges faced by the United Nations at the beginning of the 21st century, and Switzerland’s role within the Organization, as well as its part in addressing international issues. Finally, the Secretary-General attended a reception hosted by Switzerland on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Switzerland’s United Nations membership.
