Acting Director-General Participates in Commemoration in Honour of Nelson Mandela

The Acting Director-General participated in the memorial commemoration organized by UNOG and the Permanent Mission of South Africa in honour of Nelson Mandela. He led participants in a minute of silence and then read the statement of the Secretary-General for the occasion, in which it was highlighted that “no one did more in our time to advance the values and aspirations of the United Nations”. The Acting Director-General also shared his personal reflections on Nelson Mandela, having met him on several occasions. The commemoration featured speeches by Mr. Abdul Samad Minty, Permanent Representative of South Africa, Mr. Jean-Marie Ehouzou, the Permanent Observer of the African Union, former Secretary-General Mr. Kofi Annan and a video message by Ms. Navi Pillay, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
