The Director-General represented the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at the Conference on International Cooperation and Chemical Safety and Security by the
Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). He delivered the message of the Secretary-General, who noted that the Chemical Weapons Convention is the cornerstone of international efforts to eliminate the dangers posed by one of the deadliest weapons of mass destruction, as it serves the goals of complete disarmament and non-proliferation while fostering a broad range of activities that facilitate chemistry’s manifold peaceful applications. In his remarks, the Director-General stated that the example of the Convention shows the true potential of the Conference on Disarmament, the world’s single multilateral disarmament negotiating body, and gives cause for optimism about its future.
