Director-General Opens 12th Meeting of States Parties to Mine Ban Convention; Delivers Message of UN Secretary-General

The Director-General opened the 12th Meeting of the States Parties to the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti Personnel Mines and on their Destruction. He noted that Geneva serves as a valuable platform for the international community’s efforts towards realizing a world free of landmines and delivered the message of the Secretary-General, which highlighted the Mine Ban Treaty as an excellent example of the humanitarian, socio-economic and environmental benefits of an effective disarmament agreement. It further stated that the Convention should serve as an inspiration to continue common efforts to strengthen the protection of civilians against the effects of conventional weapons.
