The United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG), the site of many historic negotiations, continues to be a vital centre of both multilateral and bilateral diplomacy. Conference servicing is a major function of UNOG. The Director of the Division of Conference Management and the Division's staff are responsible for more than 800 meetings held each month at the Palais des Nations. The meetings range from half-day technical meetings to protracted negotiations on major political issues and worldwide conferences of note such as the International Labour Conference and the World Health Assembly or the sessions of the International Law Commission, Conference on Disarmament and Human Rights Council.
The Division of Conference Management (DCM) of the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG), as one of the largest conference centres in Europe, provides the physical infrastructure, as well as the conference expertise required to ensure that conference events are properly planned, scheduled and serviced.
In accordance with the guidelines established by the various legislative authorities of the United Nations General Assembly, managers, interpreters, translators, editors, conference assistants and technicians ensure the smooth running of the meetings on a daily basis.
Within the Division, Central Planning and Coordination Service (CPCS) plans and coordinates the meetings and documentation processes; the Interpretation Service (IS) provides simultaneous interpretation in six languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish); the Languages Service (LS) is responsible for the translation of documents into the United Nations official languages and the Production & Support Service (PSS), composed of three Sections, plays an active role in publishing the United Nations documentation. All the activities of the Division are supported by the necessary adequate information technology.
Year after year, Conference Services continues contributing to the enhancement of conference activities in cooperation with the other UNOG services and International Organizations in Geneva and other locations.
