Text processing assistants

The United Nations Office at Geneva is looking for candidates of Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian or Spanish mother tongue for short-term contracts.

Responsibilities

    Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Unit, the incumbent:

  • Using a word processor, types, from cassettes or sound files recorded by translators or substantive divisions, or from direct dictation, draft text including tables, graphics, equations and so forth; the original text may on occasion be used for guidance;
  • Types semi-final and final versions of earlier drafts and previously typed text, often heavily corrected, from a variety of sources;
  • Prints out and re-reads the text, entering corrections on screen;
  • Creates tables, following detailed instructions;
  • Transcribes recordings made in meeting rooms (discussions, speeches, testimony etc.).

Applicant’s profile
  • Secondary education or its equivalent technical or commercial school
  • Very good knowledge of the respective mother tongue, and a working knowledge of another official United Nations language
  • Three years’ secretarial experience and very good knowledge of text processing software.

Appointment against this post is on a local basis.

Suitable applicants will be required to sit the United Nations secretarial test (typing speed of at least 50 wpm; correction of manuscript; audio typing) and the UN Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT).
